Module 2: Recognising Dementia

Conclusion

The purpose of this module was to provide participants with an introduction to the recognition of dementia. In particular, four content focus areas were addressed:

  1. Dementia, delirium and depression
  2. Early signs and symptoms of dementia
  3. Memory, behaviour and personality changes in dementia
  4. Screening and assessment for dementia

As you have learned, the identification and diagnosis of dementia is complex—with the investigative process involving several steps and input from a range of health care professionals. Whilst the focus of this module was on clinical assessment-it is critical that, during screening and assessment, health care workers acknowledge the "personhood" of an individual with dementia. In practice, this involves providing a supportive environment for the person with dementia and their family that allows adequate explanation and preparation for clinical assessment to be given.

We hope that you have enjoyed completing this module and have found the content and learning activities useful.
